From Freda Cathcart, Cancel MVP, September 24, 2022
The fight to defeat the Mountain Valley Pipeline has intensified over the last couple of months. MVP received their 4 year FERC extension after a deal was announced to greenlight the MVP in order to get Manchin’s vote for the Inflation Reduction Act. Immediately organizations responded with petitions, letters to members of congress and a very successful rally supporting frontline communities. Recently several lawsuits have been filed challenging FERC’s renewal and Clean Water Act permits.
Appalachian Voices created this excellent resource THE STATUS AND IMPACT OF THE MOUNTAIN VALLEY PIPELINE that can be useful when speaking to legislators or for writing letters to your local newspaper (another great way to influence legislators).
Just in time to turn up the heat on Sen. Schumer to not include the Manchin deal in the must pass “Continuing Resolution (CR)” government spending bill by 9/30 or the government will shut down, Climate Week was in NYC this past week! This is a global gathering of leaders focused on responding to the climate emergency. It’s free and easy to check out their sessions at this link.
PLUS Senators Kaine and Warner reintroduced their Pipeline Fairness, Transparency, and Responsible Development Act that has never been voted on before and it needs to pass Congress to protect frontline communities. Kaine quickly released a statement to the press opposing Manchin’s demands for the MVP in Manchin’s bill (the MVP part starts on page 86). Already several Climate Justice executive directors have been arrested and even more are preparing for a peaceful civil disobedience action this Tuesday September 27 with Bill McKibbon!
Our focus for the Cancel MVP campaign remains to pressure MVP’s owners to cancel the project. Whether Manchin’s bill passes or not, we will still be working to convince MVP’s partners to stop wasting money on building a stranded asset. If your organization hasn’t already signed onto the Cancel MVP letter to MVP’s partners then please sign onto the letter here. Meanwhile, we are supporting all the efforts we know about to stop the dirty deal and we hope your organization supports these efforts too! If your organization’s response isn’t below then please let us know about it so we can support it too.
