Hi there! Thank you for your interest in and support for the work of Energy Efficient West Virginia (EEWV) to make the Mountain State more energy efficient! Here’s a rundown of the highlights from this year:
We successfully advocated for our legislature to pass a statewide mandate for energy savings in state buildings. The bill requires a 25% reduction in energy use by 2030 and improves energy savings contracting laws.
We hired a new Executive Director! Robin Blakeman – an eighth generation West Virginian – came to work with EEWV in June of 2021 and has been developing strategy and fundraising for programming ever since. She brings a wealth of experience from both faith based and nonprofit previous work.
We were able to get a city-wide benchmarking (energy monitoring) ordinance passed in Charleston similar to the state law; the first municipality in the state to do so.
At the Public Service Commission, we successfully advocated to protect low-income energy efficiency programs for AEP customers. We continue to take on the proposal to force WV AEP customers to pay for Kentucky and Virginia customers’ power plants and are advocating to give Mon Power and Potomac Edison customers access to energy efficiency programs like they once had.
We worked with our friends at Downstream Strategies and the WV Office of Energy, to complete two educational resources: (1) A West Virginia Energy Code Primer to help municipalities better adopt and enforce energy codes as part of their building codes. (2) We also recently released the West Virginia Benchmarking Primer. This will provide concrete information that municipalities or any commercial property holder can use to put a plan in place to start saving energy. We will soon announce a date for a public webinar on the Benchmarking Primer. Follow our FB page for that announcement and other important information.

We have a lot planned already for 2022 and need your help to keep our successes coming! We would also value your suggestions on anything related to energy efficiency in the mountain state and would be particularly interested in talking to you if you think the community you live in is a good candidate for outreach on energy efficiency issues.
