Huntington, W.Va. — Scientists warn that unless we radically reduce fossil fuel emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, global warming could rise above 1.5 degrees Celsius and unleash a series of unprecedented and irreversible impacts in our region and across the world.
From October 10-11, The Climate Reality Project will host 24 Hours of Reality: Countdown to the Future in partnership with TED Countdown, an international event featuring two days of digital presentations and discussions about how the climate crisis, a global pandemic, and racial injustice are shaping our lives.
As part of 24 Hours of Reality: Countdown to the Future, the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition will host a virtual presentation featuring Climate Reality Leader Dr. Randi Pokladnik on October 10 at 2 p.m. to explain the science behind our changing world.
Dr. Randi Pokladnik, a retired research chemist and expert in environmental science from southeastern Ohio, will address some of the basic science of the climate crisis. This will include the evidence in nature that shows these dramatic events, such as the California fires and the melting of Greenland’s glaciers, are being accelerated by man-made greenhouse gas emissions. We will also discuss the effects on our oceans, land ecosystems, and human health. Additionally, the presentation will discuss ways we can reduce our carbon footprint.
