Greta Thunberg on Climate: “If We Can Save the Banks, We Can Save the World”

From an Article by Jake Johnson, Common Dreams, September 10, 2019

During an event in New York City Monday night with author and environmentalist Naomi Klein, 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg had a simple message for those who claim it is “too expensive” to boldly confront the climate crisis with sweeping policies like a Green New Deal.

“If we can save the banks,” said Thunberg, “we can save the world.”

“If there is something we are not lacking in this world, it’s money,” she added. “Of course, many people do lack money, but governments and these people in power, they do not lack money. And also we need to have the polluters… actually pay for the damage they have caused. So, to that argument, I would not even respond to that argument, because it has been said so many times, the money is there. What we lack now is political will and social will to do it.”

Thunberg arrived in New York late last month after nearly two weeks of sailing across the Atlantic. The young environmentalist made the journey ahead of the September 20th global climate strikes, which she helped inspire through persistent activism that has included directly confronting world leaders and elites over their role in the planetary emergency.

The strikes, which are expected to bring millions to the streets in over 150 countries, will coincide with the United Nations Summit on Climate Change on Sept. 23rd in New York.

“I want September 20 to be a tipping point,” Thunberg said Monday night. “I want world leaders to feel like they have too many people watching them.”

Greta Thunberg to join ‘climate strike’ event outside White House on September 20th

From an Article by Zack Budryk, The Hill, 09/10/19

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg will participate in a climate strike outside the White House Friday as part of a six-day visit to Washington, D.C., a representative for Thunberg said in a statement Tuesday.

Thunberg will join other youth activists to gather and demand action one week before a series of global climate strikes slated for September 20th. Thunberg will also join other youth activists in lobbying Congress during her visit to the capital, according to the statement.

Thunberg, who does not travel by air due to carbon emissions, traveled to the U.S. in an emission-free yacht to attend the United Nations Climate Action Summit this month. Earlier today, she gave her first live U.S. interview to “CBS This Morning,” saying world leaders must “step out of [their] comfort zone” to address climate change.

“We also need to be outside of our comfort zone to prevent the worst consequences from happening,” she said Tuesday. “What I want people to do now is to become aware of the crisis that is here. I tell world leaders the science, and how it looks like.”

Hey Friends,

The Global Climate Strikes are just 9 days away and we need all the support we can get.

Can you make a pledge right now to support the biggest climate action in history?

As I write this there are already nearly 1,000 events planned across 117 countries — this really is going to be massive. I can’t thank you enough for your support.

See my original message below:

Hey Friends,

Fossil fuel executives are holding our communities hostage. Their greed and destruction have cost our world far too much for far too long.

Young people around the world, like Greta Thunberg, have been taking to the streets to demand climate action and 350.org is answering their call.

With your help, we’re organizing the largest climate action in history, the Global Climate Strikes, a youth-led week of actions demanding world leaders respond to the current climate crisis.

Can you chip in and help us pull off the biggest climate action in world history?

The power of our movement will be taking on fossil fuel billionaires starting with the largest single-day, youth-led Global Climate Strike, on September 20th, and following up with a global week of action until the 27th. With your help, the Global Climate Strikes will turn the tide on climate justice once and for all.

Duane, millions will demand an end to the industry killing the poorest and most politically marginalized amongst us and profiting off the destruction of our climate. We will skip school and leave our workplaces and homes to disrupt the status quo and say NO MORE business as usual.

Your donation can help us reach more people around the world to be part of this massive, global strike – can you pitch in today?

Changing our entire system was never going to be easy — but we already have nearly 400 events planned across 317 cities worldwide — and with your help, we can make these numbers skyrocket!

Can we count you in?

Your support means the world (literally),

Emily Southard, U.S. Campaign Manager, 350.org
