WV Natural Resources — Public Meetings on Proposed State Wildlife Action Plan

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) will hold three public meetings across the state for wildlife enthusiasts and other interested parties to review and comment on the proposed State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP).

Federal regulations require all state wildlife agencies develop a strategic plan that identifies wildlife species of greatest conservation need and recommends management strategies for these species. The plan is a comprehensive report which identifies management strategies for wildlife populations, habitat conditions, and partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations. The plan also examines proposed actions to conserve wildlife and vital habitat.

“These public meetings have been designed as an ‘Open House’ format,” said Paul Johansen, Wildlife Resources Section Chief. “This informal meeting style allows people to attend at their convenience during the scheduled meeting times to learn more about the proposed plan while providing everyone with an opportunity to provide input and interact with personnel from the Wildlife Resources Section.”

“The plan is really a roadmap that will guide our agency and partners in making future habitat conservation recommendations in West Virginia,” said Johansen. “That’s a goal our agency shares with hunters, anglers, wildlife enthusiasts, and everyone else who enjoys the outdoors.”

Monday, June 15, 2015 — 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm:

 South Charleston – DNR Headquarters, 324 Fourth Avenue

 Morgantown – West Virginia University (Percival Hall)

Tuesday, June 16, 2015 — 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm:

 Martinsburg – James Rumsey Technical Institute

For those who are unable to attend an open house, there will be an opportunity to provide written comments on the proposed SWAP by visiting the DNR website at www.wvdnr.gov. The public comment period will run from June 15 through July 15, 2015.

You are welcome to attend a public roll out meeting of the 2015 West Virginia Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) Draft.

Date: Monday, June 15, 2015, Time: 6 – 8pm, Percival Hall lobby, WVU Evansdale campus

This plan is required by all states to receive federal funding under the State and Tribal Lands Wildlife Grants program (which funds much of the DNR’s Wildlife Diversity Program), and is an update from the 2005 plan. It has been completely revised, and is a much improved document from the admittedly cumbersome 2005 plan. We would like all of you to come and learn a bit about it, and to provide written comments either at this gathering or by July 15.

The plan is available online at http://www.wvdnr.gov/2015%20WV%20SWAP.pdf. Although it is still fairly hefty, most of the pages are maps and tables in the body of the plan and tables in the appendices. A couple of printed copies will be available to look at the public meeting. Copies of the Executive Summary and SWAP FAQs will be available to take.

This plan is a draft, and we already know of a few mistakes that need correcting. The final plan will be submitted to the US Fish and Wildlife Service by September 1, 2015. Any comments given to us by the public (by July 15) will be seriously considered – we want to know what you think. Invite any other people who might be interested. After all, this is a plan to conserve and manage your wildlife – we are only stewards. And we hope to continue and to develop partnerships to accomplish goals set out in the plan.

Construction continues on WVU’s Evansdale campus. Enter the campus at the Creative Arts Center – you won’t be able to get to Percival Hall from the Towers end of the road. Park at Percival’s lot, or the new one above it. Enter the main lobby from the catwalk.
