Northeast Natural Energy said Friday that two new permits were issued to them for Marcellus wells near Blacksville, permits that have special conditions added to them by WV-DEP because the wells will sit in the Dunkard Creek watershed. These conditions, which are specific provisions not normally required in such permits, were developed with the cooperation of the company. Northeast will establish two conductivity monitoring stations on Dunkard Creek at points selected upstream and downstream of the well site.
There will be additional secondary containment, such as that used at the Morgantown Industrial Park well pad. Likewise, Northeast will use a closed-loop system and there will be no on-site disposal of any waste produced or created during the drilling, completion or other operational phase associated with the wells.
“We are keenly aware of the concerns people may have about the location of these wells in relation to Dunkard Creek,” said James Martin, chief of the Office of Oil and Gas. With the added conditions that have been written into the permits, he said the stream and ground water are adequately protected.
